Our Book Journey: Coming Together Page by Page

We’re thrilled to share that our book is coming together beautifully, and each day brings us closer to sharing it with all of you! After months of weaving together ethnobotanical knowledge, plant stories, and personal experiences, we’re finally in the home stretch.

This book isn’t just a guide—it’s a journey through plants, seasons, and stories passed down and lived through. We’ve poured our hearts into exploring plants not only as resources but as living, connected elements of culture, healing, and spirit. Each page reflects our deep connection to the land and our ancestors.

Learning the Language of the Plants
"Our language (ʔa·kǂukaqwum) is the nomenclature and taxonomy of all our surroundings."

In Indigenous culture, language holds the key to understanding the world, forming a 10,000-year-old foundation of knowledge grounded in careful observation, creation stories, and stewardship for all living things (ʔa·kxam̓is q̓api qapsin’). These teachings provide the framework for eco-immersion—the practice of fully engaging with the natural world and learning from it.

By immersing ourselves in nature, we become attuned to our surroundings, intuitively observing and learning. When identifying plants for traditional or ancestral harvest, we’re often guided spiritually, through dreams or the wisdom of elders. Historically, those called to be medicine people would undergo deep spiritual teachings, fasting, ceremonies, and vision quests, all with consistent immersion in nature.

In our modern journey of Learning the Language of the Plants, we face new challenges, yet these barriers invite us to reconnect deeply and relearn the intuitive bond with the earth.
